As we know, before the machines put into use in the UK and European markets, they are required to be CE Marked under the Machinery Directive. The directive covers not only new machines, but also machines made for personal use, as well as machines that have been modified or renamed.

Although this regulation is of European origin, this safety-related directive affects machinery and equipment manufacturers, end-users and multinational companies everywhere.

The CE mark has been required on European market machinery since 1995, and the current directive (2006/42/EC, effective December 29, 2009) specifies the following seven types of equipment:

Machinery (Main definition: an assembly of linked parts, where at least one moves and is powered for a specific application)

Interchangeable equipment

Safety components

Lifting accessories

Chains, ropes and webbing (for lifting purposes)

Removable mechanical transmissions devices

Partly completed machinery.
