How does Transfer Printing Work?

Depending on the technique the process differs, but the most general form of transfer printing happens with a soft, elastomeric stamp. The process operates in three steps:

Inks are prepared on the donor substrate in an ordered and releasable manner. (Usually through wet chemical etching or dry etching).

An elastomeric stamp is used to retrieve inks from the donor substrate. During this process, a proper preload is applied to the stamp to ensure the conformal contact between stamp and ink, which makes it adhesive enough to retrieve inks from the donor substrate. The process can be either selective (if you are looking for precise manipulation of the inks) or non-selective (for high throughput).

The inked stamp is printed onto the receiver substrate. The removal of the stamp completes the transfer printing process. The printing mode can be non-selective or selective.

While the retrieval-printing process above applies mostly to techniques that require the use of transfer papers, some techniques; such as CAD-Cut Vinyl, use solvent releasable tapes or thermal releasable tapes instead of stamps, simplifying the process.

For sublimation printing, a special kind of ink is used that evaporates when heat is applied. It is therefore unique in this way because the gas joins the polyester, becoming part of the material instead of just attaching to it.

Transfers of Various Types
Did you know that transfer printing can be performed in a number of ways? Take a look at a few of the most widely used transfer printing methods.

Plastisol

Plastisol-transfers, named after the ink used, are a great option for fine detail and color vibrancy in business logos, labels, text, and designs. It's often confused with screen-printing because the procedure is almost identical, with the exception that we print onto transfer paper instead of the garment this time. It's similar to water-based transfers in appearance, but the ink doesn't contain PVC, making it more environmentally friendly.

Litho Stretch
Litho, which is short for lithography, is the most current transfer technology. It's a wonderful mix of digital and screen printing. Litho transfer preserves the specifics of the artwork better than other methods since it is first written on paper. Since paper is a smoother substrate than cloth, the dot of color does not bleed as much as it does on fabric when touched.

Sublimation

Sublimation is the method of converting something into something else
When it comes to decorating 100 percent polyester shirts, sublimation transfers are a full-color, cost-effective option. This technique varies from the others in that it uses an ink that transforms to gas when heated. Instead of only sticking to the polyester, the gas joins directly to it, becoming a part of it. As a result, it adds no extra layer on top of the fabric, making it ideal for white or very light-colored garments.

Nonetheless, the sublimation process is close to that of heat-transfer paper in that it involves printing a pattern on a sheet of sublimation paper (in this case) and pressing it to a garment with a heat press.
There's a bonus! Sublimation operates not only on polyester materials, but also on a wide range of hard surfaces that have been pre-coated with a polymer.

Sublimation transfer, on the other hand, can yield long-lasting images but is constrained by the materials it can work with. This technique only works on polyester fabrics due to the quality of the inks. However, since sublimation works on a wide range of poly-coated hard surfaces, it can also be used on mugs and other promotional products. This is a very common technique all around! It's easy to spot because every fold or crease on the T-shirt will remain white – an issue that's especially visible under the sleeves.

CAD-cut vinyl

CAD-cut vinyl transfer printing (Computer-Aided Design) is a form of heat-transferring onto T-shirts and clothes. It's most well-known for printing numbers, titles, and logos on sports T-shirts. It prints directly onto printable vinyl or nylon, making it suitable for one- to three-color garment printing. It's known for its long-lasting matt or gloss finish, and it comes in a range of colors and designs. It's much quicker and simpler than screen printing because there's no setup time!

DTF Latex

Super Latex® PET film, also called DTF,direct transfer film, which is a new technology for T-shirt heat transfer-digital offset heat transfer, you can use our DTF printer to freely print the designed pattern on the coated PET film, then cover the printed pattern on the T-shirt by dust and bake the pattern to melt the powder, and then transfer it to various colors of pure cotton or cotton-polyester blended fabric, cotton canvas and other products by heat transfer machine or electric iron.

It can be used for personalized T-shirts, team clothes, Work clothes, advertising shirts, jerseys, bags and other fields. The image transferred has color retention and resistance to multiple washing.
